This is how our members from JBW get "lit" before programming! Our 9-12 girls were singing their hearts out to "This Girl is on Fire" by Alicia Keys. Shoutout to Ms. Treasure for keeping up the club spirit with our staff and members!
On Saturday, September 24th club members from South Columbus Teen Center attended the Lagrange College Preview Day. The event was an excellent way for prospective students and families to find out more about the private four year college. As the club members took a tour of the campus, they had a chance to get a look at life as a Panther through presentations about campus resources, met with current students, faculty, and staff, learn about academic and sports programs, financial aid, and campus life. Throughout the day, the Student Ambassadors and Admissions Staff did a great job on guiding and answering the questions from the teens about LaGrange College. Before leaving, the teens had a chance to watch the Panthers in action on the football field. GO PANTHERS!
J. Barnett Woodruff members got a surprise on Friday! Three of our teams were given an opportunity to show what they have learned in front of parents, staff, and friends in our first scrimmage of the football season. Our 9 – 12 girls Falcons played our 9-12 Cowboys team. It was a fun exciting contest with Cowboys winning 24 – 8. Our 10 – 12 boys Falcons team competed against the middle schoolers from The Club – Teen Center and won 14 – 6. The game was a great parent engagement activity with over 20 parents showing up to support our club members. Great job done by JBW staff Javaris Tells and J’Kayla Lykes for getting the teams prepared for their respective games. Also thanks to Coach Moody and teen member Elijah Adams for helping out with the teams as well (Elijah coaches the 9 – 12 girl’s Cowboy team).
Our two new health and fitness staff brought back an old favorite Friday, Cal Ripken Quikball (JBW’s version). Our 7 – 8 years old learned some of the fundamentals of baseball in a safe easy environment with Coach Washington and Coach Brown. Our members were show proper way to bat and run bases properly, as well as, worked on some valuable lessons in communication and teamwork. Great job by the two new staff at JBW and great job by Ms. Courtney Brown for giving our team and members some fun and energetic programming.
Friday at the South Columbus Teen Center, the Teen Club members took part in #WHYAPPLY Day. The purpose for #WHYAPPLY is to assist high-schoolers as they get ready to navigate the college application and admissions process. Also, to ensure each participating senior club member submits at least one admissions application or scholarship application. For our club members that aren't seniors, they had a chance to pick out a college of interest and discover their WHY to apply. Not only did we discuss about the admissions process, we also talked about the upcoming opening for students to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) on October 1st. #WhyApply #bgccv #bgccvkids #GreatFuturesNew Paragraph
Special thanks to Family Dollar Stores, Inc. for donating backpacks & stationary sets to BGCCV. These items were distributed to over 200 of our members.
J. Barnett Woodruff and MLK satellite site combined to hold our second annual "Let Us Play" Flag Football Draft. We have 28 young ladies ages 8 - 12 participate in the event, as well as, 20 plus parents and guess speaker Ms. Joanne Hill. The parents got an opportunity to understand the importance of our Smart Girls program as it relates to the physical and mental well-being of their child. Former female members and parents were brought in to give their testimony on how the program shaped them and helped them stay the course. Our members got a lesson on teamwork, friendship, and positive ways to interact with each other in creating a holistic environment around the club. The cheers flooded the room as each young lady name was called, which let us know that they understand the importance of supporting each other. At the end of the program many of the parents in attendance reached out to the staff and asked what they could do to help in the future. In giving our staff the opportunity to lead events, Treasure and Ashauria ran the family engagement activity and carried the torch well. Great job done by all the staff here at J. Barnett Woodruff and Ms. Sophia and Ms. Deja from MLK. Special thanks to Ms. Courtney and Ms. Shannon for holding the club down while the event took place. We wouldn’t be able to put forth the program without everyone playing their part!! Also thanks to Coach Jon for allowing his teens to come over and volunteer coach and be role models to our kids. Special thanks to Ms. Hill for giving the girls that extra push! FYI the first overall draft choice was picked for her work around the club and positive attitude. If you catch Aubree around J. Barnett Woodruff give her a shout out!
Our tech/digital arts specialist Zikeyia Webb used her great talents to work with some of our female members on their draft day posters. She got the girl’s involved in the overall look and showed several how to go about the process of creating the backgrounds and adding illustrations. Great job by Zikeyia, Treasure, and Ms. Courtney for putting together exciting programs that involves adding technology with sports.
Our 2-5 graders had an amazing time making these sock animals. This went along with our PBL for the month. On this 4-week journey, students learned about different animals and environments, and then they were tasked to create their own. They first Watched Absurd Planet on Netflix. This movie features very weird animals. This allowed students to get ideas for the environment and animal they will be creating in the next steps. They then designed an environment for their animal.
The staff at J. Barnett never ceases to surprise and entertain our members. Friday the staff decided to start our members day off with a smile and a bang by creating a hopscotch board at the front door. The members, staff, and some parents took some time to enjoy just a little bit of fun before starting the day at the club. Great job by Ms. Treasure, Ms. Zikeyia, Ms. Eboni and Ms. Ashauiria for coming up with the unique idea.
